Replacing the diff

Replacing the diff
Says it all really. Horrendous quote from Honda.
According to the Ex-Honda mechanic I took it to yesterday the diff shouldn't really go and he said I should get on to Honda.
Checked my extended warranty and it actually expires on 27th October. Anyone had any experience of this going through Honda, just wondered what my chances of getting it through the warranty are???
I took the car off Honda Ascot yesterday and don't want to have to take it back to Honda unless the warranty company agree it.
I have got a part from StevenM so only have to find somewhere to fit it if the worst happens (my friendly mechanic doesn't have the facilities and says it would take at least a day's labour).
Any advice very gratefully appreciated.

Is it definitely the diff this time? Didn't they say it was the wheel bearing last time? Just thought it might be best to be suire before you spend a fortune getting the work done!
If you jack up the rear of the car, then put it in first and turn either wheel by hand, the opposite one should spin in the opposite direction. If not, then you know the diff is knackered. Might be worth checking, just to be sure.

I've just had a look at the service manual, and there's no chance I would have expected it to cost that much. (Although I would draw the line at giving it a try myself. )

With a lift I would expect it to take an hour - it take me and my Dad a bit longer but its fecking awkward to pull the diff off the mounts when you have bugger all room under the car.
