and a fan pointing at the boot linked to the steering and cooling fan so you get increased down force in these strange circumstances

As Nick points out, the angle of toe of the rear wheels is altered depending on the attitude of the car.
When the weight is going to the rear (ie. the you're accellerating) - the toe of the rear wheels is altered by tie-rods attached to the hub carriers (IIRC) so the car tightens it's line (toe is the direction the wheels point relative to straight ahead).
On a trailing throttle (ie. you're decellerating) the weight moves forwards and the toe changes so the car loosens it's line. That's what passive steering is - it's passive because you don't directly have an effect on it.
Add to this the grip achieved by the LSD when the inside wheel is losing traction on a corner and the feeling is what you describe (well, I wouldn't describe it as slop, but hey....). It almost feels like the car 'twists' into the corner if more throttle is applied.
And everyone knows it's not the rad fan - it's the cabin heater, if you have the heater on full and the fans blowing as hard as possible, the less dense air in the cabin combined with the suction effects of the fans, creates a downforce effect equivalent to an F1 car travelling at 117.93mph.

And does anyone have a picture of the Brabham 'fan car' to prove bernie's point?
