I get this buzzing/rasping noise between 5K-5.5K rpm. It seems to be coming from the engine bay area, and it sound like a resonance problem with a heatshield, bracket?

Anybody got any ideas?

Guys,

Seems like we have 2 different sorts of rattles here. Mine certainly isn't the buzzing type and isn't dependent on revs, but more on how bumpy the road is and after it has been thrashed for a good while.

I've even free wheeled down hills in neutral (which helps you hear it better), and it remains the same. Sometimes I think the bleeding exhaust is hanging off.

Could it be the exhaust expanding when very hot and then not fitting on its mounting properly?

Anyway, the car still goes like stink, so why worry!

Sub,
try it in neutral when parked. Stay out of gear and rev to 5k. Does it still do it? If so, cant be clutch related. If it doesn`t then maybe. I think the clutch depression is because this lowers the revs. Thus stopping the resonance.

I haven't tried this, because its one of these noises that comes and goes very quickly. If I hear the noise then come to a stop the noise doesn't come back as I rise back up the Revs range again, it's bloody annoying , but if I hear the noise and dip the clutch while keeping the revs constant the noise comes and goes while I press the clutch up and down. So it must be a grearbox/clucth problem....I think?

One thing definitely has an affect is going round sweeping bend, this brings the rattling/tapping back

If I take it the dealers the noise won't make an appearance

It is getting worse so I'm sure it will get sorted soon enough

I reckon you have a heatshield intermittenta rattle going on there.

Maybe,

but why would dipping the clutch stop the rattling?

removes inertia through the drive train, changing the resonance properties
