Probably better for the car than bogging down and slipping the clutch to be honest

Slipping the clutch will kill it, not pre-loading it will kill the diff, spinning the wheels is fine.

Yeh, I would have thought it would be a bit nasty putting shock loads through the transmission at every set of traffic lights, even if it doens't wear the clutch plates as quickly as slipping it.

Needless to say, I won't be doing it often.

Thanks for everyone's input, just need a chance to try it out (once!)....

Make sure you take up the backlash/slack in the drivetrain
What do you mean?

Best stop using full throttle then, might wear the engine out.

Taking up slack by holding the handbrake on and bringing the clutch up, this way the gears are already meshed and you wont be putting massive impacts into the gears and driveshafts.

Handbrake on and load the drivetrain, this takes up the clearance and stops gears hitting each other when you first drop the clutch. Much better on the gear teeth and driveshafts.
