Default 'Racing' Starts

Maybe I can benefit from a few of you track-dayers' experience....

In my quest to test the 6.2s claim, I looked at a short 0-100mph vid that someone on here has on their signature. So, revs to 6.5K, reasonably quick on the clutch (but didn't dump it), enough throttle to keep revs abov 6K and..... Lots of burning clutch smell and not much else!

What am I doing wrongly? Too much throttle? Too harsh on the clutch? Or possibly something to do with the MY04 Clutch delay? Or maybe that's a bad workman blaming his tools....

Anyway, any advice greatly appreciated

Chris

The best way to light up the rears is by doing a clutch dump. Lighting the rears is possibly not the best way to get a reduced 0 to 60 though.

Disagree 100% I'm afraid. Assuming a standard car on the standard clutch the best you can hope for from a fast slip start is around 6s 0-60. Dumping the clutch and carefully moderating the slip is much quicker as I found out by my greatly improved 60ft times when using this technique at crail. To get sub 6s to 60 you have to spin the rears IMHO but if you do and you get it right the S2000 is easy capable of around 5.5s IMHO

I usually 'ping' the clutch up from about 6000rpm.

Hmmm, roll on end-of-warranty in Dec! I can do the clutch mod then.

I'll try it again sometime this week, when I get a quiet bit of road. 6.5K revs, drop the clutch, and I won't add any throttle until I'm sure the clutch has gripped.

Unless anyone has a better idea...!

I've been told to ease the clutch up till you feel it start to bite, bring up the revs into Vtec, and then slide your foot off the clutch sideways.

This preloads the clutch (so it gets less damage/wear) and if something will break, it's traction.

My quickest was a 5.7 with wheel spin al the way into 3rd. (wet day, with charger)

That's what I would do.

If your tyres are hot and the road is grippy you will struggle, since the car has crap torque low down.

Either cold tyres, a damp or loose road surface makes it easy.

I have given up trying to do it.

It's really easy on the a pre 04 as those cars don't have the clutch valve thingy.

It's good fun leaving 60ft trails of black rubber in a 350Z... especially if your not paying for the tyres

i've done it before and i've also done what you're describing (which is bad).. i found rather than pulling your foot up on the clutch like you may normally do literally slipping/flicking your foot to one side does the trick perfectly.

and i agree with Saxo, by doing this you'll get your fastest start
