Quick oil query!
I currently have silkoline synthetic ester 5w 40 in my s, after checking the oil level I've noticed it needs topping up slightly, is it ok to use any 5w40 or does it need to be ester based also?

There’s a law/agreement sort of thing that means all oil producers must ensure that any oil of any viscosity can mix in an engine without separating or emulsifying or causing any problems.
If you can’t get the same stuff just use any other decent quality oil and it won’t be a problem,

No problem with topping up on that oil, the fact you are worrying about it being ester and not compatible with other oils is worrying.
It sounds like the 'ester based stuff only' brainwashing is causing confusion.

From the Oil Guru (Mr Opie Oils himself),
One search and I found this :

I particular number 15 answers your question. This man knows his stuff.
15) If you need to top up your engine oil, how important is it to use exactly the same brand and type?
Not very important at all. Unfortunately, due to arse covering reasons we cannot print this advice on the can! Although officially all manufacturers advise against mixing different makes and grades, in fact there is very little chance of any harm being done, even if one is a mineral 20W/50 and the other is a 5W/30 synthetic. Obviously, avoid this if you can, but do not panic if theres no other alternative. Just dont mix 2 stroke and 4-stroke oil!
Hope this helps!

Cheers guys, got some Castol Edge TD stuff in the same viscosity, only needed about 300ml to bring it back upto just under the H.
Oil change is being done in around month and a half when its in for its service, last time I had checked there had been no movement of the oil so it was quite surprising to see it had dropped by about 1 and a bit of the X's.
I did originally buy 6l and had 500ml or so in a 1l bottle left over for topups, but I had to use that two months ago on an emergency topup of my mums nissan micra, so sods law I needed it before my oil change really, its the first time my S has used any oil!
