Only you can decide whether it's worth it.

Consider what the impact would be of a claim - how many years NCB would you lose? All of it? What would it do to your premium? Could you still afford it?

How many years would you lose in any event if you made a claim without protected NCB? It isn't usually one claim and it's all gone - you lose a certain number of years per claim.

Protecting your no claims bonus doesn't mean your insurance premium won't go up should you have an accident. It just means should you have one you'll get a larger discount off your new higher rated insurance quote (which is now based on you having an accident or claim). It won't save you that much, say you had 7 years no claims, you'd lose 2 if you didn't protect it. Alot of companies don't discount very much after 5 years. Personally I think this 'protecting' no claims is a bit like the extended warranty insurance the high street shops are so fond of i.e. it's a money making scam.

....and when you go for a new quote with a new company they will primarily be concerned with the claims you made rather than a 'protected' bonus i.e. a lot of the cheaper internet companies won't want to know.

Generally think NCB protection is just about worth it. I agree with the above comments that it doesn't protect your premium though.

I went through this in the summer having written off a VX220 (my fault) and now I'm in an S.

As my NCB was protected my premium went up but not to where it would have been if it hadn't been protected. However I'm not totally happy as I experimented on the insurance website as I tried the following circumstances for quotes:

1 - quote for car with 5yrs+ NCB and no claims
2 - quote for car with no NCB and no claims

The difference between these two gave me my discount given due to my NCB without having an accident.

3 - quote for car with 5yrs+ NCB and 1 claim my fault
4 - quote for car with no NCB and 1 claim my fault

This then gave me the discount I was receiving as a result of protecting my NCB.

Note all other variables kept the same.

The result - The discount I was given was less with the claim than the discount without the claim. Although I can't remember the actual quotes etc. On the face of it that seems unfair but I've not investigated it further. I considered writing to the insurance company for an explanation but never got round to it. Note also that the company I claimed under was Bell Direct (owned by Admiral) and I am now with Admiral.

So generally it seems worthwhile under the above circumstances (even if as in my case you don't appear to get the same discount). However I'm not totally convinced as if I added up the extra I've paid over the years for the protection this would be well in excess of this year's savings.

Another point brought up earlier is I didn't realise that even if you make a claim and have no protection you still keep some NCB. Before my claim I had 8 yrs NCB so would I then have gone down to 5/6 yrs? If that's the case then the protection savings would have been even less.
