Default Prop Shaft Bolts - Seized

Was all planned to drop the engine this weekend and the damn propshaft bolts are locked solid.

Anyone got any tips/tricks to getting the buggers out.

I've tried the usual WD40 and hammer methods. I'll look into getting a mini blow torch this week.

I stopped just before they rounded.

(These are the 6 on the g'box and 6 on the diff, the hex ones)

So p*ssed off as I was hoping to have the engine out by now.

I know that PL has done the diff ones. There is some info on removing them on XVipers 'How To' on changing diffs.

IIRC they need a bit of force to get them to move and it is common for them to break. When I had my diff swapped I took 3 spare bolts with me and the guy had to use 2 of them.

I had Xvipers's thread bookmarked ..... Here

Best of luck.

Yes, I've had one of the bolts connecting the diff to the prop shaft seize.

From memory, there is three "washer plates" (my poor description) which essentially allow two bolts to share a piece of metal which acts like a washer for both. I think my Dad and I used a dremel to attack the washer and get under the head of the bolt to release the tension (they screw out easily enough then).

Have you tried an impact driver?

You could also dremel a slot across the head?

Cheers guys .. I was getting to the point were they were going to be Dremmeled off.

That's for the link Steve, will have a read.

But then I found out the Dremmel was broke.

So now I've got a prop shaft that doesn't want to come out and a bumper that is held on by one stripped screw too!

So now it's a case of hunting for the spare Dremmel.

Little sharp chisel with lump hammer knocking them in the "undo" direction will release them.

Chris Franklin had a nightmare time with mine. I think he got four of them just by persevering with a blow torch, and had to cut through the other two.

Think i'll try the Dremeling out of the spacers that PL mentioned.

I'll then get some split washers and new bolts (with proper, spanerable ends) to put back in.

Cheers for the comments guys.

yup they are a bigger, I sat in the cabin applying the handbrake whilst chris used wd40, a blowtorch, monkey grips and an alan key. Took him half an hour including swearing. He reckons the wd40 and blowtorch are the key.

Halfords sell a penetrant spray which is also a freeze spray - I think the the labelling is predominately German. Works more effectively than your usual stuff
