You know the old question - how do you replace the S2000. For the money, there just isn't anything to come close. You have to spend a fair amount more to get any decent increase in power and the driving experience is hard to beat.
It's a problem I've been wrestling with for a while now - my S2000 is a company car and I was originally going to chip it in early and buy something myself - ideally a TVR now that I work from home a lot more, with maybe a 'beater' for everyday stuff. However the cost of dropping out of the scheme 2 years before the end of the lease is too high to justify doing that. So I'm keeping the S for another 2 years.
But it got me thinking - what am I going to replace the S with in 2 years time. I guess I do still need some practicality but I couldn't give up the sunny days and track-days, so a 'fun' car is definitely required too. Since boring practical cars are 10 a penny and let's face it, no-one dreams about owning a Ford Mondeo or whatever, I got to thinking what the fun car should be like.
I realised that practicality didn't have to come into it - and ideally I would like something that is powerful, good looking and makes a nice noise - so maybe a TVR? Nah, far too practical. Since looking after my race car, I have learned a fair bit about how cars fit together - so I have decided to build my own - and this weekend I went out and bought the bits....
I bought this:-
A 3.5 litre 'stiff block' Rover V8, stage 1 tuned with Edelbrook performer head and Holley Carb, should be good for 230bhp as it stands, with masses of room for tuning when funds permit. Bolted to it will be a TVR Power, T5 gearbox:-
Made from Aluminium to keep the weight down, driving a LSD:-
Stick them in a tubular steel chassis:-
and add seats and a GRP body, spray it all a nice colour and sometime in the next 2 years I shoul be driving one of these:-
A Fisher Fury V8, with around 400bhp/tonne (or about twice the power to weight of the S2000) - all I have to do now is build it (350 hours should do it.... )
350 hours?! That will keep you out of trouble for quite a while - and test Kate's level of understanding and tolerance when you disappear into the garage for days on end!
