Thanks!
That sure is comprehensive
unfortunately it hasn't made any difference
Guess I go to the dealers tomorrow then
really appreciate everyones input - it is very alarming to suddenly find your pride and joy isnt feeling too well!

Ok - so i gave the map sensor one more tap with the handle of a screwdriver - then set off to the dealers
guess what?
my S was back to normal and running brilliantly!
went to dealers anyway - they agreed to swap the sensor at the next service (and admitted that they use the same tecnique occasionally!
so - if your car is down on power - wont VTEC properly - dont despair!
whack the map sensor!
thanks to all for advise

Please do not 'whack' the map sensor. The problem with the map sensor was traced back to poor connections, beleived to be due to vibration. There's a dealer update in the US about it.
Remove the plus, clean up, replace. No whacking involved.
It's bad enough that people seem to blame the map sensor for everything under the sun (though not changing to high cam post 6000rpm is normally a map sensor connection issue), without perpetuating the wrong 'fix' that could actually make the problem worse over time.

I always did wonder as to the sense in hitting the MAP sensor....surely you'll be doing some damage to it!
I'll be adopting Brian's advice if I ever need to.
Out of interest...anyone know how much it is to replace one if needed?

Brian is (of course) right in this matter
however - cleaning the connectors made no difference in this case - for me
a last minute tap with the handle of a screwdriver - did make a BIG difference
- and the Honda dealer admitted that they have been known to do this too!
I was very concerned about hitting the map sensor - but following all of the threads thought - "what the hell" - it seems to be broken anyway and many people have done this before me.
A new map sensor will be fitted (under warranty) at the next service in any case - the dealer didn't know how much they are but estimated around
