It's the gov that put the price on. What they spend the revenue on is besides the point (lets not get sidetracked) but it's currently a tax on those that live a long way from work, friends or family.

Isn't it about 75-80% of the price of petrol goes to the government ?
Sure, petrol companies are greedy, but the main problem is tax.

Steve is right guys. The cost of oil has risen recently but as soon as war starts I am sure it will drop back down again. This is just tension and at the end of the day we are paying nearly 55p per litre to the government so they can fight a war, run hospitals, have more schools, more police, more teachers bullshit. They don't even spend more than 10% from road tax on roads or road traffic education.......Arrggggggggggg please don't get me started on this tax thingy.....
40% tax, 10% NI, 17.5% vat, 80% petrol tax, 49% alcohol duty, 66% tobacco duty. What are we missing? Oh yeah I now remember. Good roads, good public transportation, well equipped schools and not enough police officers or doctors or hospitals.......go figure.

The price per litre now is the same price I used to pay per gallon when I started driving.
Me first 20 Years old 27p per gallon (four star).
And a guess at what they were driving.
