I believe Honda states that the "S" requires 91 octane gasoline. However, the timing/ignition system will advance/retard the spark to take advantage of higher octane fuels. I typically run Shell Premium 93 octane unleaded fuel.
Remember, in the States we quote average octane values (average of Motor Octane & Research Octane). Without getting into the differences, for conventional refined and blended gasolines the Research number

Sorry for my dated information , the EU did indeed phase out leaded gasoline in 2000. Since my buddies with Caltex in Hammersmith were made redundant, I have lost track. We worked together to build a gasoline blending plant in 1995-6, and I was told it was still operating. They must have closed at least one valve.
It is still surprising that the EU took so long. I wonder what my father (lives near Oxford Circus) is doing to fuel his old V-12 Daimler.

I am lucky to get 20-22mpg from my JDM model with 100octane - must be the way I drive, but fortunately I'm managing to get the premium fuel for 50p a litre so it's not so bad I guess.
