Default Paint flaking due to stone chipping and bad paint

bumper was resprayed after a women crashed into me back in february 2005 bodyshop did a great job on all the work but noticed a couple of weeks back that stone chips were gettign worse and at the Japfest on saturday i asked a couple of other people and they said it shoudl go back as its making the paint peel away from where the stone chips are, anyway took it to the bodyshop this morning and they are saying that down to wear and tear and its because i am driving to fast and its not the paint that is at fault, come on fours year old and th ecar had stone chips but not that many now its resprayed and four weeks later it has 10 times the amount of chipping.

spoke to my insurance company as its covered under some sort of thing surely, they said they woudl speak with the engineer when he gets back off holiday and see what he can suggest.

what else can i do, bodyshop are just saying crap, yes some of it i agree is stone chips but its peeeling the bloody paint off, cannot be right.

I have left thecar at the bodyshop and siad i will not be collectign it until its sorted out he then said well if thats the case he will park it on the road outside his business so it will not be covered under insurance.

anybody got some helpful legal sort of approach other than five litres of petrol poured over all the cars in his car park. ed me right off he has.

Sounds like they haven't prepped the bumper properly or/and used enough plasticiser in the paint fraser.

I would only use a Honda approved bodyshop for warranty issues.

Poor workmanship TBH. I had my bumper sprayed at a Honda workshop a year ago and though it has a few chips, it hasn't flaked or anything.

I don't think he can just park it in the road and say its not his problem anymore. You should alert your insurers to this response asap and see what they say.

Is it going like this? I had a thread on this a while back, but it was like 18 months after I had it done, and I did have pebble dash stoneships all over, so I didnt bother trying, i just got it re-done, has been fine since. Similar things were said then.

The other thing, is that the bumper needs special paint or clearcoat or something, it has to be more flexible than paint on metal panels, i think.

that picture ian is 100% the same, having had a run around to honda and a independant bodyshop i now have a engineer coming out from Dupont paint and the insurance comapny are going to send out for a report to be done and will sort out if they find its paint fault or incorrect bodywork done.

the independant bodyshop were great cannot go on record as they just cannot he said but if that car was done by them they would re do it free of charge now, terrible that it has gone like that and they said it was due to the base coat not going off in time and then being sprayed with the top coat to quick causes this problem.

insurance company at first said not our problem as i had wished my car to go to where it did, but have now said they will take the complaint up,

the sad thing is the bodyshop I used have done work for me and my family for years never could fault the work until this happens i had a right go at the today and feel pretty ed off but if it gets sorted it will be the last tiem i use them.

I had the same happen, went back to body shop they said not our problem, went back to insurance they said get a report done, WTF i thought, went to Chiswick honda and got a quote for the work and they put on the quote due to poor preperation. Insurance then sent an engineer out and he approved the work. It was a new bumper though as the prep work needed worked out not much diff on cost.

if the paint is flaking off round the stone chips then it means the paint hasn't adhered properly to the bumper. this will be because they haven't preped and keyed the old paint properly prior to applying the new, or because there is a problem with the paint they used.

the dupont rep will be able to tell the bodyshop what problem there is. either way, the only thing holding the paint onto your bumper is the strength of the paint itself. the whole lot will need sanding off and repainting.

at last, got a reply from the all who have had to look at the car, insurance sent out a engineer who had to sort out the paint company to come and view the car and its taken ages but at last it has been confirmed its a joint issue with paint supplier du pont and the bodyshop, so on wednesday i will be taking the car to honda cambridge for a quote to re do all the work and the bodyshop are paying the bill, they have requested not to do the car as i got so ed off with them and i have lost faith in the work they did and they are then willing for me to go to any bodyshop for the repair to be done to the standard i will be happy with. so i am taking it to honda as it will be done 100% by their in house team. just guess its going to take ages to get sorted out but at least this time it will be problem free. (Fingers crossed)
