Well... After bearings number 12 13 14 were purchased... at the cost of £120 near enough... and now fitted this box is amazing.

Pure silence.

Well worth the coin if yours is making a racket.

Hopefully get all the old bearings back and get some pics of them.

It's because the box is dry from the factory and the oil pump doesn't have the pressure to get the oil to the farthest bearings - those ones. They run drier and hotter than they should and that's what causes the wear you see.

If you take the shaft to bits, you can see it's hollow and there are small holes in it that should allow the oil to flow right to either end of it and lubricate the bearings.

Great thread, i'd say nearly all pre facelift models are suffering from this now to some degree and probably some facelifts too. I might see about getting it done if im having my FD changed, Tom do you know how much labour was involved? Cheers

Thanks fella

In terms of labour it took 3.5 to 4 hours in total.

Absolutely well worth it though.

That's not too bad at all really, next time we're at a meet or Ray's you'll have to have a listen to mine to see if its the same as yours was

I'm wanting to have a go at doing the bearings on my box myself.. Mine is quite noisy when driving and when your driving it on a bit of the revs and come off the accelerator it's very noisy

Really you need to get it up on the ramps mate, doing it under a car would be a real struggle after seeing the graft that went into it.

Some of the bearings are in a right swine of a spec and mine required major fettling to remove them from the shaft.
