Paul, I'm pretty sure it's now illegal to just sling the old oil down the drain! I think councils are supposed to provide facilities for disposing of used motor oil.
Whether or not you choose to avail yourself of those facilities, as opposed to the drain, is a matter for your conscience!

I favour setting fire to it when the neighbours have their washing out or maybe having an oil lantern in the house.

You'll be in trouble if you get caught slinging it down the nearest drain, either take it to a recycling place or a garage that uses oil for heating in the winter. Not quite sure on this one but I did hear somewhere that the supplier of your new oil has an obligation to take your old stuff off you.

Put the waste oil back into the now empty container (empty as you have poured you mobil 1/etc into the engine). You then can dispose of this as you see fit.

Doing an oil change on the racecar after every race means you have to find out about these things or have a big container full of oil hanging around.
My local 'Community Recyling Station' (or tip to you and me) has a big tank for used oil so you just turn up and pour it in for free.
Your nearest Auto Factors should be able to get you a sump plug/washer - try Camberly Auto Factors who will also sell you oil and filter and probably the container you need to catch the oil as it comes out of the sump. They are about the biggest in the south - I use them for loads of stuff on the racecar, they're trade-oriented but my local branch in Chippenham are always friendly and happy to help, you don't have to know what you're asking for, they seem to be psychic sometimes ("Hi, I need a thingy for a Ford X-Flow, the wotsit that comes out above to doobrey". "Ah yes, that'll be part no. XF2457, we've got one in stock, I'll put it aside for you....").
Oh, and as CC points out in a way only CC can, any tit can change the oil

Used to do my oil on older cars years ago, however New filter, washer and my 'free Mobil1' means I just had my 6th fill of Mobil 1 with one fill of Mobil organic early in the S2000's life in < 24,000 miles.
