I thought BP conceded it was really only rebranded SUL? And someone on the board who works for BP had confirmed that?

Either way, I'm pretty sure it has never been claimed that it has a higher RON than that claimed for Optimax.

I work for BP but I don't think it was me that said anything about Ultimate being rebranded SUL...... however it would make sense......

I find Ultimate gives better response than Optimax..... I drive into the multistory car park at work every day and find that with Optimax I consistantly get lots of hesitancy around 2000RPM..... with BP Ultimate the hesitancy vanishes completely.

No, not you, Wads - there was someone else, who doesn't post all that often (one of the Ians, maybe?) and whose user name I can't now remember

I may be oversimplifying what he said when I saw that Ultimate is just rebranded SUL, but I'm certain he said it was still only 97 RON.

Not tried the stuff myself. Maybe I ought to and check out for myself whether it feels any different.

All the info I've seen internally suggests Ultimate is 97RON hence the likelyhood that it is just rebranded SUL.

Definately worth trying it..... I used to only use Optimax but since seeing the rumours about it "going off" in the tank I've tried Ultimate and now use that in preferance.

And no I don't get any sort of discount.

I was one of the people who posted on the thread Mark has mentioned. I called BP to clarrify the situtation and they confirmed to me that Ultima was not going to be 100 RON unlike Europe and that it was a replacement SUL but with a higher ratio of cleaning additives. The person who works for BP and a member of this forum also confirmed this.

I emailed BP this afternoon and it is indeed 97RON, here is the official line:

[I]Dear Mr Moffat

Thank you for your query received in this office regarding BP Ultimate fuel.

The RON (Research Octane Number) for BP Ultimate Unleaded is guaranteed 97. For Performance vehicles it is also helpful to know the MON (Motor Octane Number). This is where the Antiknock quality is tested at full throttle and High engine speed, and part throttle and low&high engine speeds. The MON for Ultimate Unleaded is guaranteed 86, however it is typically higher, upto 87.5.

BP Ultimate burns more efficiently and cleans your engine as you drive to deliver sharper acceleration and improved responsiveness while producing less harmful emissions. Compared with ordinary unleaded, the benefits of BP Ultimate come from the properties of both the base fuel and a number of other special components added to the formulation. However, don

...and Shell's response albeit a little vague!

Thank you for your recent e-mail.
We guarantee that the RON of Shell Optimax will be at least 98, typically it is refined as high as 98.6.
The MON is guaranteed to be a minimum of 86, but more typically 87.5.
I do hope this answers your question.
Kind regards,

I used to put in a half bottle of NF (Nitrous Formula) Octane Booster, available from a Scooby website. It certainly felt better, but at
