Default Oil useage

I always knew that Honda engines are bullet proof.

Although wondering about mine. Changed the oil when I got it, filled to the top and away I go. Just checked the oil and it was at the bottom of the level, I've done about 600+ miles. Surely that's not right for it to use that amount of oil??!

Mileage is around 77k

The earlier cars can use up to 1l per 1000km. You need to make sure you check it every time you fuel up.

Is that right? I'm genuinely shocked by that. Why is that then?

Yep Ive read Honda suggest anywhere up to 1.5 litres per 1000 miles to be "normal". When I got mine I don't know what oil was in it but it was using approx. 1ml per mile, so approx 1l per 1k miles. I then changed to Castrol edge 5w-40 and that went down to about 400ml per 1k. Now I'm using PETRONAS syntium 3000 5w-40 and its used very little, about 200ml per 1k.

I change my oil every12 months/5k miles

As Andy and Jon state it's the same for my 02 ... approx 1litre per 1k km - I have found this depends very much on how I drive. If I am tootling about I don't have to put hardly any oil in ... but if I keep it on cam, rev it hard and in VTEC then I will use at least that much oil.

Well that's made sad and happy. Sad because its the first Honda I've owned that's done that but happy that's it's the norm and its not a knackered engine.

Thanks guys. I got some pricey fully synth £40 per 4 litre in there at the mo. Would never use cheap oil though.

Appreciate the info. Always learning

I noticed with my MY00 (45k) it used oil, I had to check it after every 'going for a spin', after a main dealer service (Castrol edge) it seemed better
My MY03 (78k) seamed almost normal (as in not needing any ever) but does use it with Titan supersyn.
I suppose it depends on how much 6k+ revs occur.

In my handbook I think it even states "check the oil with every fuel tank fill up".
