Default Oil temp Gauges

Morning all.

Looking at an oil temperature gauge for the S as I am planning on doing some track action in the near future and would like to keep an eye on things.

I'm not overly keen on the idea of drilling and tapping into the sump so thought about sump plug senders.

Anyone had much decent experience with them? With the old Astras and 2.0 Turbos they weren't said to be accurate due to being the lowest and coolest point in the sump.

Is this true?

regards

Tom

I've got one in the sump no issues, most accurate place for it too.

Mines a oem plug that's been tapped for the AEM sender, works great and I've never had a leak with it. It does need a deep sockets to undo the plug now.

I have my sensor in this location but it gives dodgy readings. When travelling fast the temperature drops way too fast for it to be accurately measuring the oil temperature. I did notice when fitting it that the sender doesn't have much room around it for the oil to immerse the sender. I have another adapter that i might drill out abit where the sender sits and see if that makes it any better. I think its measuring the sumps temperature rather than the temperature of the oil

Mine is fine, I reduced sample rate in aem.

I have a cheap generic oil temp sensor with pull up resistor which is wired to the aem.

Its no good, least in the sandwich plate the same sensor gave accurate readings and consistant. On the move this shows an oil temperature of 60c which is impossible seeing as i now have a laminova heat exchange and the coolant is at 88c. I have another fitting which is abit more robust. I will give that a go.

What sort of oil temperatures are you reading at the sump? I reckon my sender has maybe less than 0.5mm of a gap for the oil to go around it.

My temps are always similar to coolant. On the move in the 80s iirc. My sensor is quite far down.

How much longer does it take for the oil to reach temp than the coolant/water?
