Default Oil overfilled by 500ml

I don't normally use any oil but checked my levels after a long journey and was at the 3rd X. I checked once while still warm and once was cold, same reading.

So I stuck in half a litre of oil to bring it up to max. Checked again when I got home (level surface, 15 mins after driving), and the oil level is way above the top mark on the dipstick.

I'm starting to think that my initial reading was wrong somehow, and I stuck 500ml in for no reason. Is this likely to cause me problems? Should I try and drain a bit out?

Many thanks
Rich

How many X's are on the dipstick anyways? I thought there around 5. Anyways each X is supposed to be 100ml so you might just have overfilled by a little as opposed to a whole 500ml. But from what I've read, overfilling is just as bad as having really low levels so yes you should do something about it. Have another check first just to make sure?

The 3rd X was about 1/4 'full' up the stick, which is why I put 500ml in. I read somewhere that an easy way to drain is to unscrew the oil filter and dump some out that way. May give that a bash.

Hmm

If you have a Sealey extractor, suck it out. Useful for the odd oil change too

I cant get those things to work on the S2000 the dipstick hole is too small for it to go through.

To the OP. Are you checking both sides of the dipstick? I think its generally regarded that the side of the dipstick facing the spark plugs can give a different reading to the back side of the dipstick. Spark plug side shows higher, other side shows lower. I think its something to do with the dipstick rubbing past an oil way on the way down which means your better off reading it from the back edge.

I was checking both sides yep, and it seemed to be consistently low until I topped it up!

I must have been on a slight slope or something.. bit strange though as its normally fairly straight forward to get a good reading from.

More just dont want to drive around too much if it might damage things.

If your that bothered, crack open the sump plug for a few seconds and check.

I'm not sure that its an terribly excessive amount mind you, if you put too much in it will be like a frothing latte caused by the crankshaft and can put extra pressure on the seals/pressure.

Didn't something like this happen before but it was bore wash. Getting fuel in the oil, resulting in high oil readings. Time for a oil change if so, plus changing the headlight.
