Checking oil level hot or cold won't make any difference. It doesn't actually expand or decrease in volume.
And a warm engine has just ran which means there is oil still hanging about in area of the engine other than the sump

OMG
Some diesels burn less oil than that! I'm amazed the service dept didn't think anything was wrong?

Oh dear. It was probably ****ed anyway but they should really warn you.
Sump removal is quite easy.
Lots of bolts.
Might as well find a new engine though.

You never owned a flat four Subaru then.
You are very wrong, maybe not expansion but suspension and draining make a heck of a difference.
Sorry Si, just read down the thread a bit

I did not mention drain down of fluids or suspension.
I did say that it would make no difference to checking oil hot or cold (provided sufficient time has been given to allow draining to the sump).
0w/40 is too thin. It is about sheer and may not provide optimum protection for the engine which is the main function of engine oil.

[QUOTEany suggetions as to where or how much?[/QUOTE]
Just been through the same thing myself Lotus, all be it different part of the engine going.
Managed to source a 2004 engine with 28000 miles on it,

Greg - a 0W 40 oil is not too thin at engine operating temperature.
The 0 number indicates the oil's cold viscosity.
The 40 number is it's viscosity at operating temp.
A 0 W oil is really meant for extreme cold climates so that you get decent oil flow. Or where tolerances dictate.
