Well 0w oils are for freezing climates. So it will be overly thin when cold and warming up.

The 30 bit is ok though - but I personally prefer 5w 40.
Too thin when cold?

Early engines can use a lot, but not that much. I usually use about 2-3l of top-up oil between services (7-8k).

I have heard of engines using as much as 1l every 1000 miles, but never 3l in 500 miles

I thought all honda dealers were meant to be using Castrol SLX on their performance engines these days. (5w-30 IIRC)

how much oil does (can) the engine use?
Would 3.5 litre in 500 miles seem a little exessive??
upto 1L per 1000miles is normal.

Your not getting blue exauast fumes are you??

Your either leaking it or burning it

They should but it depends on the dealer though. I asked a dealer down here what they use and they said it is the same oil thoughout the petrol cars Castrol 10 40.

Needless to say they didnt end up servicing my DC5 so I went out of my way to go somewhere else.

All oils are too thick when the engine/oil is cold.

The problem with the thinner oils is when the engine is up to temperature. The base oil viscosity tends to be lower than other oils which can cause film thickness to break down.

Its not that they are too thin when the engine is cold or warming up - but when up to temp
