Default Oil grade and Engine Noise

Had my car in for service yesterday and therefore had the opportunity to change from the standard 10W 40 semi-synthetic oil that the dealer uses, to one of my preference.

After some debate / reading through the thread on the subject of oil posted by 'oilmansi', i decided to purchase some Silkoline Pro S 5W 40 Fully synthetic.

link https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showt...748&hl=oilmansi

With the new oil being 5W instead if the 10W, hence been thinner, I seem to think that the engine noise seems more 'tappety' - when you think about it, it makes sense - just wondered if anyone else has experienced this, or if it me just listening for it more!.

Cheers
Andy

when i purchased my S2K( 3 weeks ago) I noticed that she was slightly "tappety" when starting up in the mornings. Upon inspection of the service receipts I noticed that 0W 30 had been used in the last 2 previous services (both main dealer). I have never seen anything that advises the use of such thin oil in an S2K, so when I had it service'd last week they replaced it with 10w 40 and now it is much better.

If its 5W 40 (which I use) then its going to be better with the coming winter months. It will flow slightly more readily in cold conditions, and yes, it may be a little noisier as the film is not as thick.

Note, they are the same viscosity at operating temp so you shouldnt notice the difference.

When you say tappety are you sure you are not hearing the injectors?
I have just put Castrol fully synth 5W40 in mine and noticed no difference!

More than likely!, I think my ears are more susceptible to the noise because I'm paying more attention to every sound in the car, as I always do just after servicing!!

hazdjc - read through the link at the top, as oilmansi also sells the mobil 1 alongside a few others, and tends to suggest that the Motul and Silkolene perform better, but it's your choice! - either way he may be able to supply it cheaper than the dealers and save you a few quid!

I ordered my oil 3pm on thursday ant it was delivered 10am friday!.

Thanks for the responses!!

Open the bonnet & put your ear to them!

I thought my timing chain was getting noisy, but the squirters were having a loud day.

Actually, it's probably more that the engine is very quiet.

Aluminium lumps tend to sound a bit 'tinny' anyway.
