Are you intending to take the pi** as that's how I read it?!
I quote you:

"Basically look for API rating of SM (and a ACEA rating of A5) for the best quality though"

Then you go by a recommendation off a supplier who 'recommends' the same oil for every car which only has API SL.

That is all I meant by it. Fair enough you make your own choices but you seem to be conflicting with your own advice.

Aparently. so I'm led to believe, Castrol Edge TD oil has an additive that helps keep the oil cleaner. A must for the modern TD engine & not such a bad thing for a petrol.
If I'm wrong, I'm sure Si2k will put me right

Oil! Again???

I think we should do a proper poll of oil use, and not applicable to anyone with a car that has done less that 90k. Find out what users of S2's over 90k use for their oil and go with that. Nothing like hard evidence over theories.

...Loads and loads of comments!

If it helps (or confounds!) anyone, i've had this response from Castrol:

Dear Mr Beardon

Thank you for your e-mail.

I can confirm that, as you stated, Honda do prefer the use of 5W-40 oil in the S2000 and that Edge Turbo Diesel 5W-40 is perfectly suitable for your vehicle.

Whilst Edge Turbo Diesel 5W-40 is primarily aimed at diesel vehicle owners, it is also a very good petrol engine oil, as witnessed by the petrol engine specifications on the pack (ACEA A3, API SM, VW 502 00 and the BMW, Mercedes and Ford specifications which cover both petrol and diesel engines).

Regards.

Si?
There is no special additive, it just meets the requirements of ACEA A3/B4 which is both the gasoline and diesel specification.

The formulation used in Edge TD 5W-40 does carry Porsche approval too, however not under that particular product.

(Makes no sense to put Porsche approved on a 'diesel' product - The Porsche Cayenne V6 uses a VW engine and hence needs VW 504 / 507).

I class myself as independant and do not work for Castrol.

I have been through a few oils, 3 brands on the S, and Castrol Edge offers the best in terms of useage.

Awesome stuff

Si i know you work for Castrol, but do you believe the 5w30 castrol edge is better than amsoil 5w40 FS because of the standard it must meet?

TBH when i was changing my oil it was a tossup between Amsoil 5w40 and Castrol edge 5w30, next time i think I'll use Castrol edge 5w40 TD as my engine is old.

5W-30 Edge is approved for VW 504 00 / 507 00. This is one of the hardest (and most expensive) specifications to get, so it certainly is good.

Im not sure what specifications Amsoil actually has - all I see is where it can be used rather than actual approvals. Halfords have a habit of writing 'meets requirements' too, it doesn't always mean it has actually been approved.
