Oil Consumption

Ok I might be about a tenner out on prices, its been almost 12 months since I last bought any!
Looks like you'd be hard pushed to find higher than an ACEA rating of A3 too by the looks of things from what I've just scanned through online.

Castrol Edge 5-40w Turbo Diesel.
If your consumption issue doesn't dissapear with this oil, you have a serious underlying engine problem.

Sorry - this is a Hypersonik Post, not a Kiwi post. Bloody left himself logged in on my Puter!

06 here with 40k or so on it.
NEVER used a single drop of oil.
And that's after track days too.
Good luck with getting itn sorted, it's not normal.
I use Castrol Edge Diesel multigrade.

You don't state you have any abnormal noises, but this thread has some good info regarding oil consumption.

+1 for the 5W-40 my S hasn't lost any in quite a while.

Basically look for API rating of SM and a ACEA rating of A5 for the best quality though.
A3/B4 is the highest, even though B is a grade for diesel engines. B4 is a higher performance level than B3.
None of the ACEA specs are as difficult to meet as the OEM specs like VW 502 00 505 00 or MB 229.51.

Ok so what I said was slightly inaccurate in terms of applications for the S but am I right that A5 is the latest stuff out, meant for more modern engines, not necessarily high performance ones? Also if 0w40 is too thin what would you recommend?
The Mobil 1 that I'm using is an A3 SM rated oil and so are lots of others ucluding castrol edge, mentioned earlier by someone else. So if this is the case what's the difference in price that you pay? Is it the situation that some are hydro cracked mineral oils and some are pure ester/poa oils?
I'm working on memory from quite a few years back now in relation to differences in oils so please correct me if I'm wrong with anything as I want to learn as much as I can in what seems to be a minefield of conflicting information and recommendations from different sources.
Thanks,
