Most people with tuned cars change the oil every 4-9k miles anyway.
Think that's the key here, you could run a semi synthetic and change it every 5k miles and never see any problems.

Personally I think 20w50 Tesco own is fine

So your only issue with Motul is its longevity? Is that from theory or tests?

Not loaded questions, im genuinely interested!

Not sure really, API tests are hard to pass so you could see it as an easy way to make and sell an oil by not bothering with it.

On the other hand you don't have to compromise, API standards consist of lots of tests and some of these tests will have an amazing result on one oil but then it will fail another test. A high detergent oil for example will be very clean on the piston deposits but the detergent washes of antiwear additives and you end up with lots of wear.

Motul is a race oil so Im not sure how well it would deal with the things required for a road car environment when the people who developed the oil. We are working on a spec free 'trackday' oil that will provide maximum protection. However it will need changing every 1000miles as it is optimised.

Road cars throw in all issues such as water in the oil, fuel dilution from cold starts and lot of idle conditions (the worst thing on a camshaft) Again, no API rating means it wont have had to pass the sequence 4A test which is measuring camshaft wear on the Nissan KA24 engine held for long periods of idle.

Anyway Im starting to bore myself now These are a few of the tests sludge being a big issue on a lot of engines, especially the VAG 1.8T, these engines need an oil that performs well with sludge and hence have the VW504/507 approval.

Just I like the confidence of using an oil that has passed all the API tests and hence has an API rating. API SM being the latest spec.

Only if you use the Tesco's Finest extra virgin stuff, CocoPops. Or the stuff flavoured with basil or rosemary.

I found it slightly odd that a dealer recently put semi synth in mine claiming that fully synth was unnecessary?? I agree with the comments made about it not being an exotic special-case engine, but is that right?

Kind of a pain given the 5 Litres of FS I have sitting in the garage at home which I can't top her up with until it's changed.

Do it yourself?

I'm in two minds about whether to continue getting dealer servicing, and hearing some of the stories I wonder if it's better to let them put whatever oil they want in, drive it home and change it, rather than trust them to put in what you want.
