Many new cars still appear to have Cassette players in them... I've had a few hire cars through work lately & they've all been under a year old - I've been really surprised that they all have cassette players in - I don't own any cassettes & don't know anyone that uses this format - considering CD players are so cheap I'm surprised that they still do this.....

also.

I can't understand this like a CD player is some sort of premium to pay for. I see Argos are advertising CD players for under

I think its because car makers buy in obsolete head units from audio manufacturers for pennys - if a car maker can save even $0.01 a car they will do (even if it makes the car a lot worse for doing so). Did you ever hear the story about the Ford Pinto? Cheaper for a few lawsuits from dead relatives than to mod each vehicle for a few $ each car to prevent spontaneous combustion in the event of a rear-end shunt - alledgedly!

My brothers and I are clubbing together to get my dad a new car for his retirement. We're looking at a new CLK, and couldn't believe that they stick a cassette player in as standard on a 35k list car. It's standard on everything but the CLK 55 IIRC, which, cheekily, has a cassette player as a 'no cost option'.

B'stards.

It's mad isn't it?? the only cassettes available these days are 'spoken word' story tapes - which are probably geared towards blind people - highly unlikely candiates for new cars!! (or maybe not!!) lol

I'm gonna have to leave it there cos I've broken into a cold sweat - due to posting in a forum other than 'off topic'

Bring back 8 track !!!!

But seriously, this just seems like another way in which we are being shafted by the car industry.

Personally I would never buy a brand new car. Does this make me a cheapskate ??

I agree with the above. My father in law couldn't find any cassettes when he wanted to buy some.

However, Jaguar offered a single CD player as a no cost upgrade if I didn't want a cassette player in the dashboard. I took them up on the offer. Not all manufacturers are using it to stiff the customer.
