notchy gearbox
#11
Gear change felt "notchy" is the best way I can describe it when I first drove the S2000 (drove 2, both with low miles and felt the same - both unabused especially my one as owned by mature couple) but never obstructive and very accurate. It is literally "flicking" through the gears when warmed up. If it feels obstructive then it doesn't sound right.

iv got the same problem mine is a 2003 with 28000 miles on the clock. Only had it 3 weeks but iv noticed from 2nd to 3rd gear theres kind of a liitle clunk i feel but i cant hear it.
I was looking at loads of old threads and they say most s2k's do it at some stage.
Also i had all my oils changed by tom at tgm racing only 2 weeks ago.

Change the clutch fluid first, thats probably not been done and is an easy first step, then gearbox oil (made a huge differance on mine), then clutch peddle free play, Lastly serch foe stiff/squeaky clutch (not directly conneted to notchy shift but worth doing. All in this order of easyness.

mines the same, and always has been. It's an 07 plate with 20,000 miles.
I think its just the gearbox takes a whole lot longer to warm up than the engine, but once its warmed up properly its fine.
your commute isnt long enough in my opinion to warm up the gearbox oil. Dont worry too much about it, it is a pain, but the gearbox is awesome when its warmer. You'll see when summer comes, then its nowhere near as noticable.

Mine was notchy don't replace Anything till you've greased the release fork on the slave cylinder.
It takes 15 minutes and my gears are smooth from cold and never notchy now.
I'm on my phone so can't link but there's a guide to doing it , search " greasing realease fork notchy gearbox"
everyone with a notchy gearbox should try this, mines a 03 with 70k and it is now perfect and has been for 7000 miles since I did it

Exactly the same for me, came from EP3 to FN2 which have superb gearbox's to the s2000 which i'm struggling with. Although AA man did say the clutch fluid needed replacing next service.

I just searched for "greasing release forks" and im going thinking of giving it a go.
But just to check, if i grease the release forks the notchy feeling from 2nd to 3rd gear should hopefuly go? im only asking because the "greasing release forks" thread is mainly for a sticky clutch .

Thanks everyone for your opinions.
I feel a bit better knowing it's not unique to me, mine is far away from being like a knife though butter (unless the butters hard with lots of bits in :-)) ...... I am going to try some of the suggestions .... fluids initially and see how that goes ..... only problem is I haven't a clue what I'm doing so will likely have to get it done when i get it serviced.
Must say it's very hit and miss ..... was out briefly today and it wasn't too bad so not something I'm going to worry about to much but will hopefully sort at service time (unless it's really easy to do)
cheers
