no 5th gear
got a question for you. my s has suddenly decided to stop having a fifth gear, it just pops out, it wont stay in gear at all, if i try tentatively to hold it in place it grinds. it goes in when the car is stationery but any gentle revs and it pops out. all the other gears including 6th are fine and the car still drives fine. i was going to get a mechanic to drain the gearbox fluid to see if its the teeth, ie if there are any metal shavings in the fluid. this was a suggestion from a mechanic pal, rather than take it straight to honda. if it is the teeth is this repairable? i dont fancy the cost of a new gearbox... what a bummer.
i am not at all good with cars by the way tho i did assist a mate to change pads and discs on the s before
cheers

Sounds like the synchromesh rings to me... try some of the cures above they may provide a temporary cure, if not either have it repaired or replace the box...

Mine went through a phase of being very bad to get into and out of fifth after a long run, but it got better years ago!
I suspect the selector fork might be bent (common on Accords and Preludes if one has a habit of skipping fourth and stuffing it into fifth) but it's not common on S2000s.
For a few quid, an oil change might be worth a try. If not, that second box might be your best bet.

on the way to the garage i thought i would try it in fifth and lo and behold in it went and stayed there... go figure... garage had a good look at it but couldnt replicate it so it appears to be fine. computer doesnt report any faults. seems like a few other people have experienced similar on here. lot better than a new gearbox thats for sure though i am questioning whether i was doing something really daft. anyway thanks for the help \ advice.
