Default New owner with a few problems

Hi guys and girls

Will start off by saying this seems to be a great forum. A wealth of knowledge on here if a little chaotic in it's layout!

I've recently bought a my-00 s2000 and having a few issues. Wondering if you chaps would be kind enough to help me out...

1. The car seems to have a high idle- she idles (when behaving- see point 2) at around 1-1.1k revs.

2. Idle seems to fluctuate regardless of engine/ ambient temperature (even with all electrics off) maybe 1-2 "bars" on the dash from a base idle as above

3. In gear de-acceleration sometimes (most times) is very jerky. Almost like kangarooing but it feels like the engine is revving by itself- this is not my driving, I've owned countless Hondas in the past and know what a highly strung 4 pot should behave like. Some times she will "hang on" to the revs upon clutch pedal depression but only for what seems like less than a second or two if that

4. The engine does actually rev by itself. This has happened on two occasions so far, the last being yesterday. I pulled up at a red light and she would rev up to 2-3k and back to idle every couple of seconds independent of any driver input. This lasted for around 30 seconds until I blipped the throttle to around 4k revs and the issue ceased.

5. I think the free play in the clutch may need some adjusting (slight graunch in 2nd and 3rd gear shifts, 2nd being worse) but I have a question- I have read about a half-inch of low resistance clutch pedal travel being normal before encountering resistance- I seem to have this but then a further half-inch or so where there is a small (very small) step up in resistance before encountering the full heft. Is it this "second stage" I should be looking to eliminate?

The car is fitted with breathing mods and an aftermarket ecu if this makes any difference, mapped by euro spec in Guildford. Again if it makes any difference the engine seems to be healthy otherwise having not burnt a drop of oil in the 1000 miles since I bought her, oil remaining golden in colour and not a hint of smoke that I can see.

Sadly none of these problems seemed to be present on the test-drive (private purchase)

Tomorrow I'm going to clean the IACV with carb cleaner and also clean the channel under the MAP sensor to see if this might resolve my idle issues.

If anyone can help with any of the above I would be most greatful. Is there anything I have overlooked or not considered?

Cheers

Barry

It doesnt sound like its tuned ok, or its got an air leak or something

My mate put a big turbo on an Escort RS years ago, did all the stuff you're describing till it was setup correctly
Is the power all there?

Thanks for the input. Power seems to be there but hard to tell with nothing to compare to (my first s2k)

I could do a 2nd gear pull tomorrow and see what speed i'm doing at 9k?

Edit: thinking about it this ^ may not be helpfull?

1 and 2 are pretty normal on an aftermarket ECU, 3 and 4 isn't.

Why do you have an aftermarket ECU? is it standalone or piggy back? can you try removing it and using an OEM ECU?

Hi eSeM

I bought the car with the ecu pre-fitted. Presumably there to make the most of the breathing mods. It's an aem unit. Not being fully clued up on these type of things i'm assuming it's a standalone?

I would try fitting the original but unfortunately don't have one. I'm assuming i could easily source one though.

Would an ecu reset wipe the map on this kind of emu?

Lose the EMS and buy a stocker. That's where I'd start

I'd be tempted to

1. Sell the AEM and put stock on there or
2. Get it properly tuned
