Default New Clutch coming?

Had a service at Honda just before Christmas and the technicians there suggested that the Clutch is on its way out. Its seen about 30K miles so it hasn't done too badly.

The question is should I upgrade to an aftermarket clutch?

Looking at this thread there are a few options but whats the general opinion of the forum crowd? I think to get Honda to replace the clutch is around

30k not too bad? YOu must track the car a lot or do a lot of standing starts.

Is it slipping, or making a noise?

I hope the 30K is genuine, but then if it is how come the premature failure?

You say Honda have 'suggested' it's on it's way out. What makes them suggest it?
Is the clutch squeaking when pressed, if so it could just be the forks in the slave cylinder that need greasing? Or, is it slipping when accelerating?

mmm, they wanted to replace mine on my old s as they thought it was too heavy - functionally it was perfect and had in fact been replaced about two weeks before.

Ask why. Many honda "technicans" are used to civics etc. which no doubt have lighter clutches. They service a S2000 and think, wow! this clutch is heavy, must be something wrong.

However, it may be a valid observation by an experienced mechanic (there's prob not many of these left ).

Either way, you'll want a specialist to do this given Honda's quotes!!! Unless under warranty of course.

The S2k clutch is almost as light as a civic's clutch when its working properly. But the pivot point dries out making the pedal heavy. It can be lubricated without removing the gearbox which lightens the clutch action and is somewhat cheaper than a new clutch.

I would get a 2nd opinion by someone you trust.

The 'technicians' who serviced my wife's car told her that it needed

Cheers for all the replies!

To be perfectly honest it spins up well, doesnt slip or make a noise, so I couldn't believe it either!

I think Dracoro hit it on the head, and from what I understand, the early cars had relatively heavy clutches anyway(?)

Its had a clutch slave cylinder about a year ago, it could be the linkage just needs greasing?

What kind of life can I expect out of a clutch? My brother had it on the Nurburgring a few times(!!) and I dont hang about on the roads either....

Until it slips or causes trouble I would leave it well alone!
