Near Miss of a different kind.........................................
Flying along minfing my own business in my (the RAF's ) Shorts Tucano at 280 kts down a very nice narrow steep sided valley in the Lake ditrict, when I see a black spec on the saddle of the truncated valley.
Before I could say anything a Tornado came ripping past probably at 540kts (about 600mph) no further than 50ft away from me.
It was so close I could see the pilot and Nav's heads, and both were 'heads in'
All in all, a very brief experience probably lasted about 6 seconds, but has remind vivid in my memory for well over a year!
Sorry to divulge, and yes I can imagine what kind of mess that dear would have done. I've hit a sheep at 60mph in a Fiesta, lets just say neither the sheep or the fiesta are longer with us!

No he didnt hit it.
Near miss means that it was very close i.e. it was a miss but it was very near to the car.
however if you were to say nearly miss as you quoted then that would imply that you did hit it. It's all about the extra Y

rubbish. miss = miss. hit = hit. can't have a near hit or a far hit, a hit is a hit. as is a miss.
today i have mastered punctuation, the shift key will have to wait until tomorrow.

That's quite interesting actually - everybody (well, nearly everybody) knew what I was talking about when I said 'near miss', but you're absolutely right Mooms it's a peculiarity of the English language.
How bizarre! Never even thought of that before...
How do I change the topic title to 'Almost Hit Something But I Didn't!'?
