OK, an update.
Situation as follows
Spare remote (lets call it remote B) with new battery works perfectly OK.
Even with new battery, remote A wouldn't work properly (kept sending lock signal). Took it apart and the two battery connectors were barely touching. Bent the connectors in a bit and now it seems to work OK I think.
Main problem is that both rubber buttons are a but crap, one is unusable. Very soft and sticky for some reason. Anyway left it to soak and will see if it "firms up". Meanwhile the remote is all together but without the rubber buttons but can still press the buttons on the circuit board and all works OK.
I think, ideally, I need new rubber buttons (and case while I'm at it I suppose) from HamiltonPalmer? I'm assuming, over time, the buttons just deteriorate, a bit shoddy quality really.

The refurb kits (the shell & buttons, without PCB) were about £5 when I got some two years ago - for the two button type. New complete remotes are about £45. Remember to specify the exact remote type.

Well, the existing fobs started working (got refurb kits - i.e. just the case + buttons + new batteries).
Problem is now different. The buttons do the correct thing (open is open, lock is lock) however sometimes they simply don't work. Nothing happens. Was stuck the other day and kept pressing (from different angles!) and eventually it opened.
Sometimes it works fine, whenever I "test" it at home it seems to work but worried about when out. Went into garage yesterday and nothing, had a few goes and eventually it opened OK.
I may take the unit out (under seat I think?) to see if there's anything visually wrong but don't want to have the unit reconditioned to if it's only the fobs. No way to really tell if it's the fobs or the unit in the car, I suspect the latter as both fobs play up....
Any other experiences/suggestions? is there a "reset" of alarm (not fobs as I've done the relearning procedure etc.) that I can do?

How far away from the car are you trying to use the remotes? The range on mine is appalling, if I stand at the rear of the car then I have to point the remote at the rear screen for anything to happen.

Range isn't relevant with mine. I wa actually in the car the other day and it wouldn't work! Sometimes it will work from many yards of the car. Basically when it doesn't want to work, it doesn't matter how close to the car I am.
