Depends on the age of your car mate as the facelift models have a Lazer cut key.
do a search on here, there have been quite a few key posts going around over the last couple of weeks or so

Cut-off period seems to be MY04/MY05.

Older cars need a 'cylinder' key.

Newer cars need a 'laser' key.

With regards to your spare key : it seems that you either are missing an immobiler chip in it, or it's gone faulty, or it hasn't been programmed.

Might be worth showing the key to your dealer.

Could be what Honda call the valet key, opens the doors not much else. If it's a later car then Honda will want neigh on £200 to supply and programme a spare key.

Not sure if that is correct.

A valet key operates the car, opens the doors etc. It just doesn't operate the lockable glove box(es).

It's the key you're supposed to give to your dealer when you have your car serviced.

Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.

I have a 2003 car, and there is what I assume to be a valet key attached to my spare "ignition" key. It has a black plastic sleeve over it and I have never used it. OP, would you like me to see what it does?!?

Sorry for the wait!
My valet key has a dark grey moulding on the end you hold, as opposed to a black moulding as on the ignition key, but the blade of the key looks almost identical. However the valet key will not open the boot or the inside cubby. It will open the door and start the car.
So it sounds as though your key is not the valet key.
I do not think any of my keys has any electronic component of any kind. I have the 2 button Honda alarm fob with each set.
