Despite trying to force the nut up the shaft, it won't budge (not sure if this is a common afliction or not )
I think I'm going to have to take the nut off with a hacksaw as Fletch suggested..

has the new knob got the double-h markings on it or is it plain? cos if the latter why not just screw it on for now. only problem if it's marked is you might not be able to line it up straight.
sounds like the thread's gone.

At the risk of furthering the innuendo (me? never!), have you tried using some kind of grease on the nut, just wonder if this might help it engage the thread or something.

if the thread has gone on the nut, put an open ended spanner smaller than the nut around the gearlever just under the nut and give the spanner a GENTLE tap with a hammer to see if it moves. If the thread is gone you should be able to knock the nut up the thread.
Failing that, buy a nut splitter. The're pretty cheap and should allow you to split the nut and remove it.

Update: Aren't hacksaws brilliant! The nut is now off (although it was bloody hard work to saw through it), and the Muz knob is now on and looking just right!
Thanks for your help guys
