Default My damaged engine findings

As some of you know, i had a Greddy Turbo kit and Hondata fitted to my car recently by CPL racing in Sheerness. I opted for the 3mm head gasket for extra safety even though i wasnt planning on running excess boost, bit of a safety measure. When this was being installed some retainer damage was spotted so i also fitted a newer head. Was informed the rest of the engine looked fine.

Well 300 miles later i had a very bad banging, sounded like bottom end failure. Decided i wanted my usual mechanic ( TGM racing) to do the engine work. finally this week we stripped out the old block and inspected the damage. What we found was slightly worrying. Basically number four piston has stated to melt around the crown and also the bore has started to go as well. The piston is rocking so far in the block i suspect there is very little left of the skirt underneath. We need to strip it out properly but have been concentrating on getting the new lump back in. Number one cylinder is showing the same signs as well. Sorry for the bad photos i only had my camera phone at the time

Personnally i would attribute this to detonation. 300 miles to melt a forged piston

Now i was only making 320 fly bhp on 12psi boost so nothing extra ordinary. Emailed CPL today asking what they though about the situation. The reply i got was basically he thinks the power level was far to high for the standard pistons and i should either uprate them or wind back the power. Im only making the power that Greddy claim on there website and several hundred below some of the American turbo boys. All the SC uk boys are making more than that.

I get the feeling im gonna get no where with them and tbh i just want my car mapped properly by Mase so i can actaully get to drive it this year.

Any body got any thoughts?

Melted piston crowns and loss of piston skirt (probably ringland failure gone mad) sounds like huge amounts of det which equals bad mapping.

Not good.

(and all speculation based on my MR2 Turbo days)

Yep, as per the PM Lucky, det can destroy a piston in several seconds in extreme cases... so 300 miles is perfectly possible.

send them all the dynos you can find showing people in th US with much more power on stock pistons!

I tehd to agree that you will not get much out of them though.

Interestingly I got a quote from them for a fit and tune but needless to say I think I will look elsewhere!
