Default MX-5 - opinions!

Just sat in one at my local dealers.

A pleasant reminder of my old ones, same gearbox, excellent driving position, all very sympathetically modernised.

The inevitable silver powder-coat is kept to a minimum, thank fcuk (unlike the 360 Spyder that I passed). The 'dark wood' inserts sort of wrk and make the car a bit remeniscent of an old Triumph roadster.

There are many storage boxes and FOUR cup holders. (No, I don't know, either!)

The overall effect is a bit plasticky compared to an S2000, but it's fun.

The roof takes up a hell of a space when folded, but what a roof! Canvas & glass, one-handed operation. Brilliant.

They have re-packaged the engine, clearly inspired by the S2000. It is let into the bulkhead slightly. The radiator is canted at 45 degrees, so that there is in effect a cold air intake straight over it. Expect the Rice boys to have after-market fun with that.

The car is modestly bigger than old and pretty, apart from full on. Then it looks like an obese Pikachu, so not a good look.

No, it's not an S2000 alternative, but as an unpretentious, fun car, I'd have one over most things tomorrow.

poor BMW. There will be a lot of Z4s feeling a warm, acidic yellow rain from on high very shortly.

Nice write up. I still look back nostalgically at my MX5 as it was such a good, fun car. I enjoyed every day I drove in it and it was the perfect prelude to the S. In fact the g/f wants to get a second hand one sub

good motors. assuming you can stand the 'hairdresser' type shyte that people throw your way.. geat handling, very nimble with good brakes, a bit too much rool especially on the facelifted one (2nd gen?).. the original is deservedly a classic.

the engine disappoints though.. cooking engine and so i could never have one.

Although the MX5 is no match for the S2000 i still like them & would consider the new model if i was being sensible......

I owned a MK I MX5 when they first came out & enjoyed the 40K miles i did in it. The MX5 introduced me to convertibles. Driven a convertible ever since!

If they stopped making the S2000, I'd seriously consider one.

I seem to remember reading that the Mazda 2.3 supercharged engine from the Mazda 6 will technically fit - whether they ever fit it is another matter.
