Default Motorist banned for trying to warn oncoming traffic of speed trap!

From today's Daily Telegraph:

[I]A pensioner who warned motorists of a police speed trap was convicted of wilfully obstructing a constable in the execution of his duty, banned from driving and ordered to pay

I intend to keep warning other road users of speeding traps and they can take me to court but will have a battle to fight to convict me. In the same argument as the article they could prosecute companies which make GPS systems like Road Angel for providing the details of the cameras. It just won't work...

I will also continue to warn other drivers of speed traps them. This makes me sick, its a complete disgrace. Its part of the guidelines for GATSO's etc that there is a warning sign, so what is wrong with this bloke doing it???

I cannot understand what the offence committed is anyway? Surely it is freedom of speech to say speedtrap ahead? Maybe he should change it to "revenue rasing device ahead". Let them try and prosecute for that

The guy is a hero.

We need more of these people. This type of action is totally LEGAL in Holland!

Police are hypocrites on this one. They have always harped that road safety is of paramount importance, but not we know it's their purse that matters !

The pensioner made the road safer with no penalties to anyone !

You can't say he was obstructing the officer form doing his duty. If you jumped on him, smashed up his speed gun and cuffed him, then yes I might be inclined to agree. Ok they may then argue that the old fella was distracting drivers with his sign, but what about all those signs for flowers in laybyes, home working and huge roadside billboards ? If his sign had said "please slow down, traffic blackspot" would they have had the same objection as the net result would have been the same - traffic slowing down.
To me it just seems that plod has got his knickers in a twist because someone has spoiled his money for old rope trick.

This makes me so angry, how the hell can they justify giving him a driving ban when he wasn't even in a car? These people need to be accountable to someone, it seems they just dish out whatever punishments they want and don't have to answer for it.

This seems bizarre, particularly the driving ban for a non-driving offence.
I'll keep an eye out for more news on it.

I hope he appeals

What about if he had a sign sign 'Theiving Pigs ahead'.

They would have to admit they they were thieving pigs before arresting him for 'wilfully obstructing a thieving pig in the execution of his duty'.

Hmm, tricky one.

Fair play to the old fella though!

If everyone on this site puts in 10p I reckon we'd have his

You can be banned (11 points I think) for being driven in a car by someone you know is under the influence IIRC
