Default MOT failure

Hello all - just had the garage call and its failed its MOT on emissions, they're a good independent garage that I have used for years, they have tried everything to get it through... on fast idle the acceptable range (so I am told) is 0.970 - 1.030 and I came in a 1.198...

He checked on last year’s results and it sailed through on this - nowhere near as high..

The car is FHSH and well looked after with a lowish millage (35K)

Any advice other than go and see the stealers?

Thanks

TKL

You are running very rich, or have a failed catalyser I expect.

First take a look for engine error codes (your CEL may be up the creek).
Perhaps a broken MAP or temperature sensor can cause overfuelling.
The O2 sensor may be shot.
CAT - I would buy a sport cat, the Honda is VERY expensive.

Excess fuel may have killed the cat too

m1 is right, get it looked at by a tuner as the cat shouldn't have died with that mileage, something may be up the creek

During my last MOT, I had to undergo the emissions test twice to pass. 'Apparently' the catalyst needs time to 'warm up' to work effectively.

AGreed, thats what the airpuimp is for on first startup they only work at some very high temperature.

As Steve says o2 sensor or CAT.

And as Neil says what your fuel consumption like this would point to the 2 above

My man at the garage says he tried it several time making sure that the whole engine was warm as well

I very rarely drive it - the missus uses it mostly, I asked her if she thought the consumption has gone up she said it wasn't possible (she is an eco friendly tree hugger)... so I guess no, not noticably..

Give it a good drive with lots of vtec and retry it, if she drives like Miss Daisy that may help, O2 sensor also sounds worth a try, popular failure item.
