moding a HKS Hiper
I'm thinking of moding my HKS Hiper.
from looking at the various pictures of the Mugen exhaust (cat back) it appears as though it is quite similar in design to the HKS apart from the torpedo shaped resonator on the HKS (where the pipes split).
I was thinking of removing this resonator and splitting the exhuast flow evenly into the two rear pipes.
What do you exhaust experts think would be the effect of this mod?
Will the resonance still be there at 3 to 4K rpm?
Just how much louder do you think it will be? the Mugen zuast has huge silencers (they look bigger than the HKS items).
cheers

Mugen has a mid-silencer as well. It would be louder, but I doubt you'd make any real power difference. No way of saying how much louder.
The stock exhaust removes the resonance by the helmholtz resonator - that bit of pipe sticking off the side near the cat end. Unless you add one, or hoooooge silencers, you'll get some boominess.
If you're really after louder, preview something like the Spoon exhaust (mine will be back on soon - and I'm not the only UK bod with one). If you decide you like something like that, sell the HKS as it is, and buy a single.

thanks Brian, I'm not after a louder exhaust, the HKS sounds damn fine under load, but I am interested in trying to remove the boomines at low revs.
Does the Mugen have the same resonance problem at 3 to 4K rpm as the HKS?
If I did sell my HKS, I think I would go Mugen. I like the twin pipes symetry (sp?).
cheers

I've still not attended a Honda meet so I have not seen/heard a mugen cat back.

If someone's willing to take a risk, adding the resonator pipe close to the cat like stock might get rid of the boom. (Note: I'm not recommending trying this, don't blame me if you mess up your exhaust!)
For pics of the Mugen exhaust try searching. There are bazillions of them...
