Probably time for an update.
I've been speaking with Dan at HPE and Ian at Clockwise. Dan has booked me in for March ish (I'm in the engine build queue!). We've got a build planned which apparently will meet my goals.
I've got an order in with TDI for a Toda high compression stroker kit. It uses an OEM 2.2 Crank, with bespoke Toda rods and pistons for a 12.25 compression ratio, running on the OEM FRM cylinders (mildly bored and honed to 87.5mm by Clockwise). Info from Dan is that it'll run fine on 95, 97 or 99 with appropriate tunes.
Also, it'll have cams, volve springs etc from Clockwise, plus some of his head work. I won't go ITBs straight away, but it's an option for the future. It'll also have brand new bearings, pumps etc. No point skimping when I'm going this far.
Ian has talked me through a few of the details of why F20c boring/honing usually fails, and seems to know his stuff. And a friend of a friend engineer has worked with Dan & Ian and says they're the real deal.
So, I'm currently looking at engine hoists/cranes, as buying one will give me far more flexibility than hiring, and if I end up hiring twice (once to take it out, once to put it in, and even a 3rd time to put it into a van), then the price difference won't be all that huge. And in a £10k bill, a couple of hundred is peanuts.

Beware Had to put an extension on my borrowed hoist because of lack of reach over too centre point of engine,lifting from front of car ect.

I don't have a lift. I'll be swapping gearbox for a USDM one, and I want to keep my wings and bumper in good shape, so I'll just remove them for the little effort it takes. Should all make it easier out the top.
