None of the last set requires concentration for an extended period of time Moff.
Smoking - no brain function required (excluding lighting the ruddy thing)
Radio - done by touch (if you're only changing the station)
Speaking to passengers - I find it doesn't need the same level of concentration as talking to someone on the phone (strange that one)
Altering the mirror - you only take you're eyes off the road a a second or so

agreed... but some people take the piss even when doing those. My point is that I should be able to answer my phone whilst driving and say "in the car, call you back", without it affecting my driving, so why should this be made illegal? If I answer the phone, weave all over the road and 'drive without due care and attention'... BOOK ME!!!

Smoking may be a no- brainer, I smoked for 10 years until quitting so I know what its like to smoke and drive. Lighting up is an issue, so is trying to get rid of the butt. This should not be an offence either, but if the driver is 'drive without due care and attention'.... BOOK HIM!

Think you get my point

Believe me I agree with you.
It's just that using a phone while on the move seems to require a higher level of concentration.
Steven made a good point on lack of concentration. I tend to agree that any type of phone use should be banned in the car.

It's just a symptom of the 1984 designs of the government.
Just don't get me started on ID cards!

Then you've got to ban CB radios and police radios as well.
Hell... you may as well ban passengers.

I think they've got it exactly right.

I'm sorry but IMHO you are just as distracted by talking to someone next to you, maybe even more so, than when in a "hands free" conversation. It is the norm for most people to gesture in some manor to get a point across when talking to someone. If you are having a remote conversation you are not encouraged to gesticulate to, or look towards, your other party when talking.
Honestly, I can talk just as much rubbish without concentrating at all.

I think it's a very simple issue.
Holding something in your hand? Anything at all?
Yes?
Then you are not in enough control of your vehicle.

Some could argue that in an automatic your left hand is not that important.
Hmm, not sure. I think I'd have to say that if you've got hold of anything then you don't have full control of the steering wheel.

Back to CBs.
You have to hold the mic. Why is that any different?

Re-reading... Ultimatly I agree with Moff.
It's all down to taking proper care when driving.

If you can easily pick your nose without causing an accident then, I say go for it.

People using a mobile are generally on the call, and out of control, for far too long.

Most dangerous...some middle aged bloke speaking on one when driving...he was all over the road changing gear with his right hand ..steering with his knees I suspect & no signals in over a mile when at least half a dozen where required for the directions he took, manoevres carried out....sooner the better.

At the acadmey thing last Sat, chaps were syaing that in a 60min period, a typical driver only concentrates upon driving for 15mins! Go figure!

i'm all for such legislation, but as above said by Moff, I do consider this a waste of money. but if it does highlight this single thing, then so be it. Rather that than loose more lives on our congested roads..

here's some food for thought:-

if you are using a mobile 'phone and are involved in a fatal accident it's game over people.....you will be financially ed if it's proven you caused the accident because you were distacted

Is it really worth taking the risk?

I was cut up last night by some wanker on the phone, it really pees me off
