Tell me about it mate... i'm in the same boat (car ) doing 35,000 miles a year and it's been a bit naughty the last week or so on the roads round here but no incidents to speak of.... car will only lose control if i make it or mis-read the conditions and i'm as heavy footed as they come.

I thought about the beater too but another tax disc, insurance etc and it put me off... oh and i can't keep out of the S anyway.

I never asked for 'peformance' in the snow, I just dont want to find myself unable to get up any hills (or fly through any hedges in the ice!)

I just meant the tyres ability in snow shouldn't really be a deciding factor. These are all summer tyres, if you're really concerned about winter, buy winter tyres, but you won't get the same amount of fun from driving it in the dry, wihch defeats the object of having the car in the first place. Sure you don't want it to be undriveable when there's a spot of rain, but there's hardly ever snow and when there is all performance tyres are going to be more or less equally crap.

As for the beater, I reckon my Vectra is worth less than my no claims bonus.

The alternative is get a set of winter rims. Buy a second hand set of wheels from the board and put your winter tyres on them.

I keep thinking about this but my tyres to date are spot on.
