Great tip with the no-go gauge.
I've built plenty of engines in the past but for some reason, I have no clue how v-tec works and I've never bothered to look. For some reason I'd decided they were bucket and shim type and I really couldn't be arsed.
Then I spoke to Garage-R he explained which type they were but for what he's charging and the fact it's a nice run out, I may as well let him do it.
Although......
This afternoon before I left work I checked codes (same again) and turned off the light (not reset ECU). On the way back, I'm at a set of lights and the CEL light starts to flash.
Oh ARSE!
I can't do anything and the lights turn green so I have to pull away. As I do, the light goes to constant. I keep going for a few hundred yards (half expecting my bonnet to head for the sky..) and nothing untoward.
I pull over about a mile away and turn off the engine.
I try starting it and it fires up and no light.
I drive home, it's running sweet as a nut with no light.
Checked codes, same again.
Do I drive it to work tomorrow?
(In fact, until next Saturday when I'm at Garage-R?)

WTF
Have you been on the pop?
Gary, if you do drive it, just take it steady and no VTEC. If it is clearances, it's enough of a problem to be causing a mild rub I guess, due to clearances being too tight.

Started the car this morning, all running fine, no CEL.
Came to work in it, no CEL. It sounds fine though.
Will see what happens on the way home.
I think I'll check the clearances myself this saturday for some peace of mind (I'll stick with the plan to go to Garage-R next weekend for him to do a double check and he's replacing my diff and gearbox oil at the same time).
I have to admit, it's making me nervous driving it at the moment as I'm constantly watching the dash for the light....

I think the on the pop comment was directed at baldy2007 who's post makes no sense at all.
If it is valve clearances its likely that the valve clearances will either be too great in which case a valve won't open fully which might be the cause of your miss-fire. Alternatively if a valve seat has recessed or a valve worn then the clearance will be too small and the valve will be held open slightly instead of sealing.
Either way, there shouldn't be any risk of valve/piston contact.
But MB's advice of no VTEC until the problem is identified and solved is prudent.

Got off early expecting a bugger of a job.
Get home, start taking stuff apart.
Off with the coil cover, throttle cable, everything unclipped etc etc and then got the coil packs out. Number1 was covered in carbon but I thought no more about that really as I plodded on.
Check the first 4 valves and all bang on.
Sudden realisation what carbon on coil cover must mean....
Plug 1 finger tight (if that).
Although to be fair, no one else suggested it (And don't make the excuse that it's bleedin obvious)
Although, not test driven it yet.....
Back in a mo.
