This sounds like the tappets- the oil will be really thin when hot and hence you hear more rattles etc. It would make sense that u hear when the revs rise as well, i maybe totally wrong but thats my 2 pence worth!

I have the same noise!

Only get it when hot (very) or after a spirited 'last' mile on the way home.
Pull up in the drive and the car sounds like a bag on spanners at idle, raise the revs just a little and it goes away. after a miniuite or so the noise fades and stops?

Is this what you have vtidan ?

I've been thinking it the timing chain tensioner needs 'doing'.
Possibly. Its always been slightly noisy when I start her up in the mornings but this is the first time i have really noticed it with the engine hot. I didnt have a chance to leave it for a minute or so to see if the noise goes or not. I shall try this when I get home tonight.

BADA BING- it doesnt sound like a heatshield to me. Defo sounds engine related

I get ringing sounds when it's around 7.8-9k rpm, and louder closer to 9k rpm.

Sometimes when I cruise (especially in 3/4th gear) in low revs I can also hear light ringing sound, it disappears if I go into neutral. I've read something about repacking the gears???

Remember that the S engine does tend to make quite a tappity sound - so I've been told.

As a complete novice with engines, can some one explain tappets. What are they, why do they make a noise, is this an issue and how would you fix it.

Cheers

Nick

Ruckus yours sounds like timing chain / tensioner. Like mine did at 72k miles. Look for my thread on 72k service and +timing +chain +tensioner

that's the ringing shifter issue. its the gearshift mechanism vibrating. Nothing to do with the engine.

I could not find AEs thread but plenty of others on the subject.

A couple of questions I could not answer:

1. How much to get the tensioner replaced at a dealer?

2. Is any harm being done to the engine?
