a stock expansion tank is a plastic bottle with a lid and a pipe that draws and feeds fluid,
a oil catch tank is a metal version of this so no reason why it wouldn't work. simples really

It's a pressure tank, it's supposed to take the pressure of the coolant system, and not let air in
Not saying it won't work but every catch tank I have seen would not hold pressure and almost certainly let air in when the rad sucked the water back
