Default Mandrel Bent Tubing on an Exhaust

Hello,
Been down to see an exhaust maker in St. Annes Permazaust. Had a good chat with the guy and saw lots and lots of exhaust bits, various boxes and configurations and lots of 'Jap' style boxes with bungs.

They bend the pipes with a machine, much like a plumber uses but in big scale but it's not a Mandrel bend.

Having talked to the guy he recons the whole Mandrel Bent pipes thing is very important for an F1 car but not so in the case of a road car.

Thinking about it if I go for a large diameter pipe and it's not Mandrel Bent it'll still be as big if not bigger than stock so should still have the benefit of being bigger?

Comments from the more in tuned?

He's gonna say that as he can't do them

Mandrel bends mean the same diameter, no crappy crush bends that reduce diameter and therefore airflow.

Get yourself an HKS

I wouldn't touch a home made exhaust.

Crush bend? No thanks.

Despite the diameter being bigger overall Jaegar, the areas where he has bent the pipe will reduce the airflow through the pipe quite a lot, as the inside of the pipe will no longer be 'smooth' and free flowing.

This is all I could find with a quick search on t'internet:

You should get the idea.

Yes I know.

And I know that too.

The question was for a road car would the difference be noticable?

Is the stock exhaust Mandrel or just bent?

Ryan, Read that side with interest and have found these guys, Zorstec, not to far from me in Shipley I think I'll have a run over a take a look.

StevenM, I liked th HKS but I fancy something different this time.

Similar but different, maybe BIG & Loud but with bungs for the long drives or the track.

I know what you are getting at Jaegar.

Would you notice the difference? Probably not, seeing as any performance gain from an exhaust is likely to be minimal anyway.

It will probably cost you something like 1-2 BHP if you don't have a mandrel bent exhaust on the S but on an F1 car it will be 9-10 or more, and we all know what a difference that can make, when the car weighs two thirds of f**k all.

And a mandrel bent system would be quieter I thought, being less resistance to the gasses and all

Yeah the argument on difference is it.
F1 yes huge difference, Corsa no difference.

But I guess I'd be betraying the S not to give it the best opportunity to produce so Mandrel it is.

Yes noticed that too. Some Anglicisation but it's really close.

Anyone else used/know of them?
