Making the engine sound really cool

There's probably a thread on this somewhere but I haven't seen it and I didn't know about it before.
I met up with Matt this morning and he showed me what the engine sounded like in VTEC with the air filter box cover taken off.
Oh yes!
If it doesn't harm anything in any way, I'm gonna leave it off for the trip down to Dorking tomorrow

Done that trick Pete, it does sound great. You'll probably notice a whistling noise on tickover which disappears as revs are applied. There's probably a sllight loss of power, but nothing to worry about. I don't think any harm at all will come from leaving it off.

Big thanks to Pete for making sure I did this! What an awesome sound, spine tingling isn't the word I'd defy anyone to take a ride in that car without the airbox lid on and guess it was only a 2l 4pot under the bonnet. When you hit 6000 revs the engine note changes like someone throwing a switch too, so obvious you've hit the VTEC sweet-spot

Agreed, it is awsome!
I have read that it leads to a slight decrease in hp - but the 'grin factor' more than compensates for this.
On the way to the pub yesterday I ran up a tight valley - single track road, rock cliffs 20' each side - nearly as good as a tunnel (I later realised not many other peole would have come in this way, so may have wondered what I was jabbering on about as I arrived at the pub ). Top down, airbox cover off, air temp around 0 deg. - the sound - oh, the sound
I also quite like the whistling sound the engine makes at idle with the 'box off.

No, sorry, no sound files. But it will be quicker to try it out, honestly. The air filter box is at the front left of the engine as you stand looking from the front of the car. It has 6 or 7 swivel spring clips holding the top in place. Just pop the clips back and lift off the top (2 second job). The air filter and everything else stays as is. It's as simple as that.
(I know you don't have your car yet, but I guess maybe you have a friend with one? )
When Tifosi passed me yesterday I thought he had a superhot V8 under the bonnet !
