Default Lifting Engine away from gearbox

Hi all

So I'm day two into my week of work on getting the car ready for it's full respray next week and to stick it on my engine stand for some NA upgrades.. :-)

No, I have done engine swaps before on several cars so think I'm up to the task however ran into a problem this evening.

The engine block and head (head still attached) is ready to come out, all mounts bolts off, brackets off, wiring loom detached, all pumps and starter motor removed.

I got the the stage of attempting to lift the block and head out of the car this afternoon with the use of an engine crane, all of the bolts from the gearbox bell-housing out (some of them were a right bi+ch!)..

Now I have removed engines from gearboxes before but after 4 hours of trying this with an mechanically experienced fried, we just could get the block free from the gearbox!!

I can see all off the bolts have been removed as the block will come away from the box to some extent (2 inches or so) but not enough to free the spline from the box and never evenly around the box.. I know patenice is required with this sort of work but feel like we may be going about this wrong..

I have seen some mention about people removing the box from under the car before lifting the engine out, or removing them both together.. Is it not adviseable to take the approach I have started??

I apppreciate you comments.

The box/engine attach with dowels as well as blots. To get the box to separate you need to coerce the box a little at a time from multiple angles/sides or the dowels will catch and you'll struggle to get it off.

Have you pulled the clutch fork out of it's pivot point and off the release bearing, you need to remove the slave cylinder, then tug the fork out of the holder, you won't septate the two until you do this

No I haven't, good shout!

What's the best way to access it? Can I release it from the outside under the car?

See above you missed my edit, the arm just comes loose but won't come out of the bell housing so don't try and force it just let it hang loose,

That's what it will be, and remember it's a pull release bearing not a push.
