Lets clear up a common misconception (oil)

Just bear in mind that Castrol don't do a 5w-40 or 10w-30 proper synthetic in the UK and don't say Magnatec as this is in fact a mineral oil.
So this may have a bearing on the 0w-30 SLX proper synthetic recommendation!

Aha,
So why do they recommend Castrol at all then? I'm going to put chip fat in and see what happens then There's probably evidence somewhere to suggest that it would be ok.
So when I've finished this bottle I might go to 10w-30 then, avoiding Castrol.
And to think that one of the reasons I didn't get an RX-8 is because I couldn't be bothered to keep topping up the oil! D'oh.

BMW are no better. For the M engines they used to demand that you have Castrol TWS Motorsport 10w-60 - strangely the only place you could buy it was at the dealership. But some recommend Mobil1 5w-40 and others will use other 5w-40 oils. The manual states anything from 5w-40 to 10w-60 and customer services will tell you to use what the manual says
I went for a good 5w-40 (as per Simons Silkolene post above somewhere) which is a proper synthetic and in the range specified by the manual.

Only specific BMW engines require 10w-60 and I have the BMW Bulletin that states this but it appears that Dealers can't read!
The best guide is still the handbook.

Actually the Dealers (BMW) haven't got a clue and that's half the problem.

I have the "clear" message from BMW UK bulletin issued 11/04 and it's not ambiguous at all it's just that Dealers don't seem to understand it.

Hello Si Doing the rounds I see...
Im using Motul in mine, think it was 5w 50 or similar. Coming from Scoobynet, the high temp stability is much more of an issue, where I imagine shear stenght is more relevant due to the high revving engine, and therefore greater frictional forces?

I'm sure a number of other owners would be happy to know what's what.

I don't have access there but you're welcome to C&P this and I'll register and pop in if you want to introduce me
BMW Longlife LL01 oils are approved for all BMW engines except:
M43/CNG
S54
S62/E39 (up to 02/2000)
BMW LL01 oils are the following viscosities:
0w-30
0w-40
5w-30
5w-40
Only.
Issue status (10/2004) Date 1.11.04.
I also have the full list of approved oils at this date (LL01 is soon to be replaced with LL04 and we have a new product by Fuchs coming on stream this summer called Titan GT1 5w-30 LL04)
I also have the following BMW (GB) Technical bulletin issued 3/11/04
Quote:
Incorrect guidance is offered in relation to the correct operating fluids approved foe BMW vehicles.
Procedure
Please ensure that the operating fluids manual on TIS is consulted regularly as it contains accurate and up to date information on specified operating fluids.
An example of this is the Approved oil for the S62/E39.
The S62/E39 up to 02/2000 are specified SAE 10w-60 engine oils.
The S62/E39 02/2000 onwards is specified Longlife 01 fully synthetic
A check of section 3.0, 5.0 and 9.0 of the operating fluids manual confirms this.
