My car's got Shell Helix synthetic oil 10w-40w in it. Is this OK or should I get it changed to something else? I don't do track days or anything like that but like chucking it about.

This is best oil post I have ever seen. The explaination is in laymans terms which at last I can actually understand so thank you very much!

Why is it that is it very hard to get Mobil1 5w40. Most stockists only seem to sell 0w?? (e.g. Hellfords).

Personally I'd use a proper 5w-40 synthetic as suggested above.

Same hot protection but better cold start and 90% of wear occurs when you turn the key.

I think you'll find they only do a 15w-50 and a 0w-40 in M1 guise or at least that's all I have on the shelf. Got some great 5w-40's though, here are some:

Tim this is why you think 0w-30 and why I'm using it.

You might need to click on the photo a few times but it WILL work. This is from the logbook pack that came with my MY05. I'm sticking with what Honda Recommends. There is NO mention of Synthetic vs Mineral

Thats just a castrol marketing insert isn't it?? or is it actually in the manual - there will be a tech spec section in there.. can you post a photo of that?

I'll go get it. Be up in a few minutes. It is honda branded that brochure. It is a bit of marketing but a bit wierd that they'd let that get in if it wasn't recommended.

Stupid Fecking Honda can't make their minds up. I will point out that when I picked up my car for the first time and they were taking me through all the bits, they pointed out the oil leaflet, not the oil in the manual. Why do they publish such crap? It's not like Castrol don't do 10w-30 or 5w-40.

Apologies for the quality but the type is small, if you click on the picture you can read it.

But notice the section that state that there should be no additives in the oil at any time.

On a slight O/T comment. My Dad got a BMW 325, he tried asking them what oil to put in, tried reading the manual. In the end he resorted to buying the smallest size available directly from the dealer, so he knew what to put in it. Why can't they make things simple?

It was easier for my MR2, I never had to put any oil in it. never used any and the dealer did my oil changes.

BMW are no better. For the M engines they used to demand that you have Castrol TWS Motorsport 10w-60 - strangely the only place you could buy it was at the dealership. But some recommend Mobil1 5w-40 and others will use other 5w-40 oils. The manual states anything from 5w-40 to 10w-60 and customer services will tell you to use what the manual says

I went for a good 5w-40 (as per Simons Silkolene post above somewhere) which is a proper synthetic and in the range specified by the manual.
